Several years ago, I began creating a portrait series of our animals cousins at AZA-accredited zoos. It has become an ongoing project of mine called “Individual of the Species”. I was fortunate enough to receive a “Spotlight Award” from an international photography magazine called “Black and White” for it, and was showcased at the Napa Valley Library. My paramount intent is showcasing animals as individuals with unique personalities and emotions, rather than simple members of a collective species. This view posits that humans are not separate or above animals, but rather part of the continuum of life on this wondrous planet, and we must respect that for their future, as well as ours.
