As a photographer, I have enjoyed the indulgence of foreign travel and had adventurous plans for the year of 2020. Then, COVID-19 hit and I discovered a new place to photograph. It was an area filled with complex lifeforms and species unfamiliar to me. This place was my backyard. The zoonotic-induced pandemic has forced a reevaluation of our relationship and commitment to conserving the natural world. I believe that every species and ecosystem, regardless of perceived importance in our society, is fascinating and worth saving. When photographing locally, you become more acquainted with its rhythms and actors and gain a greater appreciation for species that are often overlooked. There is another world living right next to ours. It is an ecosystem vibrant in natural gems, and it is waiting for us to discover it.
